La Habra Collaborative
The La Habra Community Collaborative is a catalyst for non-profits, service groups, businesses, schools and faith-based groups to unite under one umbrella. The collaborative serves as a connecting point for individuals to come together to share opportunities and resources in an effort to improve communication and effectiveness. Through shared resources, we strive to make La Habra a stronger and more united community. We address three key issues: wellness and fitness, juvenile crime and teen pregnancy.
- More than one third of the children and adolescents in Orange County are overweight or obese. To help combat the rise of childhood obesity in our community, we are joining with the University of California, Davis Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), St. Jude and St. Joseph Hospitals. We are providing wellness and fitness education to students and their parents through various programs throughout the community. Focus Group Chair: Rebecca French, Elite Fitness Owner and Trainer
- The goal of the juvenile crime focus group is to help reduce teen crime in La Habra by providing programs, activities and opportunities for the children, teens and families. We have recently developed a parent guide listing the opportunities available in our area. We recently helped secure a "Nursing Workforce Diversity" grant called AHEAD (Advance Healthy Equity and Diversity). This grant is providing medical career pathways between La Habra High School and the California State University, Fullerton Nursing Department. In addition, this focus group is collaborating with the La Habra Area Chamber of Commerce to encourage local businesses to mentor La Habra High School business students on their career pathways. Focus Group Chair: Vicki Eagleson, La Habra High School Counselor
- In 2010, Orange County was ranked #3 in the highest number of teen births in all of California. The teen pregnancy prevention focus group is working with local schools and organizations to educate teens about pregnancy prevention. This education includes the activation of a local chapter of FRISTERS in conjunction with Crossroads Community Church, which meets weekly to support new teenage moms. Focus Group Chairs: Teen Pregnancy and Fristers - Elaine Friesen, Associate Pastor at Crossroads Community Church ; Education and Prevention: Jorge Montoya, Assistant Executive Director of The Gary Center
