Cal Fire Releases Updated Fire Zone Maps
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps for Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) throughout the state, which includes the City of La Habra. As required by the State Fire Marshal, the updated maps identify areas based on the severity of fire hazards, with zones categorized as moderate, high, and very high risk. In La Habra, the Los Angeles County Fire Department is contracted by the City to provide fire services and the City of La Habra is making the updated maps available to the public for review and input.
What this Means for La Habra Residents
Some residents who live in homes not previously located in a designated high fire risk zone may now find their properties included in the updated fire hazard zones. According to CAL FIRE, all homeowners in a “very high fire” hazard zone must comply with defensible space regulations by clearing flammable materials to create an “Ember Resistant Zone,” which helps prevent ember ignition and enhances wildfire safety. Home or property owners looking to sell their property will be required, by state law, to provide a disclosure to prospective buyers if that property is located within a designated high or very high fire hazard zone. Residents and property owners can use these maps to assess their own risk and take potentially life-saving steps to help make their properties more fire resistant.
The release of the updated FHSZ maps initiates a public review process, during which residents and local agencies are encouraged to provide feedback. Following this process, the City will move forward with the adoption of an ordinance to formally designate Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ) within local responsibility areas, as required by state law. This ordinance will help guide future planning, development, and fire safety regulations within the identified zones. The public hearing to adopt the ordinance will provide an opportunity for community engagement, and will be announced in advance.
Review the Maps and Provide Input
La Habra residents are encouraged to review the updated FHSZ maps and provide input from April 21, 2025 through July 11, 2025.
